Equity In Lactation Artist Grant
Equity in Lactation Grant
Call for Artist Proposal Submissions
Artist Proposals, Due July 25th:
Minnesota-based artists of color working in any medium are invited to submit proposals to receive one of two $2,200 commissions for original work making meaning around the subject of breast/chestfeeding. Artists will be notified of their proposal’s jury selection by July 30th and have until August 27, 2021 to complete and facilitate installation of their work.
The two selected commissions will be on display from late August to late September, 2021, one at the Grand Portage Health Services in Grand Portage, MN, and one at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic in Grand Marais, MN.
About the Project:
Cook County and Grand Portage WIC work to promote, support, and protect breast-/chestfeeding as an infant’s first food, with the knowledge that optimal infant nutrition has lifelong protective effects. Helping to prevent diabetes, obesity, cancer, and infant death, breastfeeding plays an essential role in correcting the racial health disparities endemic in our communities. Breastfeeding promotion that focuses solely on the medical advantages of breastfeeding misses an opportunity to explore what it might mean to recover a rich tradition of breastfeeding after collective trauma and generations of family separation, cultural genocide, and reproductive exploitation. Engaging honestly in these conversations and amplifying voices of people of color is at the core of the project in which you are invited to participate.
How to Apply:
Grant applications must include:
- Completed Application for Equity in Lactation Artist Grant
- Detailed description and/or rough of proposed work
- Artist statement
- Examples of previous work, i.e. portfolio, artist website
Submissions and related questions accepted at firstname.lastname@example.org through July 25, 2021.
About the Grant
The Minnesota Department of Health is offering funding “to promote equity in lactation support across the state of Minnesota. While Minnesota has one of the highest breastfeeding initiation rates in the country, it also has some of the largest inequities related to ethnic, cultural, regional, and economic disparities. Solutions embedded in the community have the greatest impact on reducing disparities.”
The Grand Portage and Cook County WIC agencies are collaborating on this project. For more information, please contact email@example.com
