Active Living Steering Committee

Since 2011, the Active Living Steering Committee (ALSC) has been meeting monthly in Grand Marais, MN, to achieve the mission of, “More People, More Active, More Often.” The committee originally formed through the efforts of the local Safe Routes to School Committee, as they realized that changes would need to be made community-wide for children to walk and bike to school safely. Committee membership includes a Cook County Commissioner, the Cook County Administrator, a Grand Marais City Councilor, the City of Grand Marais Administrator, a County Public Health Professional, City of Grand Marais staff members, an ISD 166 School Board Member, a Sawtooth Mountain Clinic Community Health staff person, and community members representing persons with disability and the elder community, as well as others.

The work of this committee has included many projects over the years, including a Walking and Biking Route Map for Grand Marais, bike racks and bike maintenance stations (locate them on the map), and numerous Safe Routes to School events.

Active Living Steering Committee Vision Statement:
The Active Living Steering Committee envisions and supports our communities throughout Cook County and Grand Portage as places where people of all ages, all ability levels, and all income levels are able to move around on foot, bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers in all seasons.

We are working to improve the quality of life, public safety, and accessibility so that people can be physically active in their daily lives and routines, through locally created policies and infrastructure/built environments that support this vision.  Through a grant from ARDC, the Active Living Steering Committee will be working on a re-visioning process to bring the goals of the group into the future.  The group will hold a re-visioning meeting on August 29th, 10:30a-2:30p at City Hall.

This committee also serves as the Community Leadership Team (CLT), supporting the local work undertaken through the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership as part of Healthy Northland. The CLT meets quarterly as part of the ALSC meeting.

The Active Living Steering Committee convenes the first Tuesday of each month 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Grand Marais at City Hall. For more information, contact coordinator Andrea.
